Henning Schulzrinne designed SIP in the year 1996. It is a protocol which signals an application which creates / modifies / terminate the session accordingly. This also includes multimedia functionality. In the year 2000, it was known as 3GPP signal protocol and IMS architecture element. The advantages of SIP include reduction in complex activities, independence in transportation and it is text-based protocol.
