How to redirect a web page using cPanel?

Whether you want to transfer the benefits of your existing domain or just shift couple of pages you can use redirects to do this easily and also get the benefits in terms of search engine rankings by getting the rankings of the old domain to the new one.

You can use Redirects to make a webpage display another page to the viewer.

What is a Redirect?

Using the Redirect feature you can redirect a specific web page to another web page. The redirected web page would take the user to the intended web page and display the content on that page. This is also useful for making web page with a long URL accessible by redirecting it to a shorter URL which can be easily remembered by the visitors.

With the help of this tutorial you can also set redirects for desired web pages to redirect the visitor to the web page of your choice.

Follow these simple steps to set redirects on your website:

Step 1. Login to your cPanel account.

Step 2. Scroll down to the ‘Domains’ section and click on the Redirects icon.

Step 3. Choose the domain and directory you wish to redirect and enter the desired web page where you want to redirect it to.

Step 4. Select the kind of redirect you want e.g. Permanent 301 or Temporary 302. The difference between the two is given below.

Types of Redirects

Permanent Redirect (301)

A Permanent redirect would be used when you want to redirect the page to another web page permanently. Using a Permanent redirect would also inform the visitor’s browser to update the URL if it has been bookmarked.

Temporary Redirect (302)

Temporary redirects are used for redirecting a web page for time being and you want to the search engines to give preference to both the pages. And a Temporary redirect would also not update any bookmarks of the visitors.

Step 5. Then you can choose the type of WWW redirection you want and if you want a Wildcard redirect then check the box as well.

Note: Wild Card Redirect will redirect all files within a directory to the same filename in the redirected directory.

You cannot use a Wild Card Redirect to redirect your main domain to a different directory on your site.

Step 6. Now, just click on the ADD button and you will see the confirmation that the web page is redirected to the mentioned web page.

You can now press GO BACK and see the list of Redirects and also remove the redirect if you wish to at any point of time.
